“And that is the morality tale of Black Friday. Yes, there will be mall riots over flat-screen TVs. But maybe, just maybe, people are shopping on Black Friday because they can’t afford the prices that greedy corporations charge on a regular basis—saving up to buy things like shoes on deep discount. And, of course, people who are suffering under the weight of economic inequality would like to have nice toys for their children and decent electronics (electronics are arguably a necessity to participate in 21st century western society) and the only time of the year they can afford such things is during the super-sales pushed on us by mega-business on Black Friday.”—

I drove past three Best Buys last night at 10:00-10:30pm and folks were serious and committed to getting their new flat screens and laptops.
I think there also something else working there when elite folks condemn working class folks for standing in those lines for gadgets, toys clothing. There is an element of “you are working class, you don’t deserve pleasure” working in the subtext of those comments.
One of the things that bug me is that the only electronics ever mentioned are TVs. I know a lot of people who are standing in line for computers for their kids or themselves today. Closing the digital divide without access to some of these hefty discounts & cheapish internet packages would be very difficult for a lot of those people.
Thank you so much for this. It bothers me so much when people talk shit about those shopping on Black Friday. For me growing up, this was christmas. This was one of the only times when my mom was able to buy me new clothes and shoes. If we were lucky, I might have gotten a toy or two. You don’t know the exact reason why people shop on Black Friday so stop acting like you do.
I am thankful that you are in my life. You are the best thing that has ever happened to me. I am so grateful that you stuck with this, and didn’t run away, when I was struggling last spring. No one would have blamed you. But you stayed in my life, and now we are living life together. (That still blows my mind.)
I love you, beautiful. Thank you for everything.
P.S.: Now wake up so that we can eat Thanksgiving leftovers and plan our day!
I wish I was getting a sunburn on a sunny, hot beach somewhere, with white sand, turquoise waters, and lots of ice-cold beer. No more overcast skies and unpredictable temperatures, please. The weather needs to either embrace the cold for the season and be on with it, or fuck off.
Fuck wool coats and musty-smelling scarves pulled out of their summer-long storage places. I want to cover my legs in coconut oil.
